Nachdem ich anscheinend ohne Quellenangabe bei Heise aufgegriffen worden bin ;), noch einige Bemerkungen hierzu:
Also trotz meines detalierten reports ist hier in Hong Kong an der Uni noch nichts passiert. Diesen offenen Telnet bug finde ich ja besonders krass.
Aber mein Kumpel erzählte mir, dass es auch in Dresden Institute gibt, die über Samba / 777 freigeben... Naja. Zumindest keine Informatiker.

Ja, ich weiss, buzzwords und so. Aber im Rahmen meiner Programmiertätigkeiten ist Anderas für unser Programmiergelumpe ein super Buzzword eingefallen: "Highly optimizable" - das zieht doch wohl überall.
Als ich das dann neulich auf ner Geburtstagsfeier erzählt habe, hat mir einer der Programmierer vom Zentrum für Informationsdienste und Hochleistungsrechnen (ZIH) noch folgende Story erählt: Die bauen in ihren code eine Schleife von i=1...10000000000 ein, die im Grunde nur Zeit kostet, und jedes Mal, wenn sie wieder eine Woche faul waren streichen sie eine Null. Gleich ist die Performanz um das 10-fache gestiegen. Geiler Trick, Jungs.

Going out in Hong Kong often implies a look into timeout. But not all hints there are accurate. For example: I've been to Q97 yesterday. It did not start at 22:00, but 0:00 o'clock. And the music sucked.

Being tall vs. being small

Already in Germany I'm considered as tall boy, although I think it is just a little above the average. Here in China I seem huge. You can tell it, because when you are on the one end of the underground, you can look to the very other end, without remarking other heads. Just a kind of black floor - asian hair.
Here so many people are jealous about being tall, and of course it is nice, to be able to use even the high cubboards in the kitchen without the help of a chair, but remember: small people _can_ use the help of a chair to become tall. Tall people can do nothing to become small. And so we have to live with all the disadvantages. We need large beds. A 2 m bed _is small_ for a 1.9 m guy, because you want to put your arms above your head when you sleep. We need large shoes - it is not _that_ easy to find size 45+ in China. Even our boxershorts have as much material used, as a normal pair of jeans of an average chinese girl. And at the same time we have to deal with the 10kg luggage limit at the airplane. And our seats are not taller than for small people. You feel like in paradise - we feel like in prison.
We have to eat more food. We always hurt our head because of dwarf design in tubes or other places. I could continue, but I think this is enough to give you an idea of being tall.

Ich hatte ja schon mal was von TED hier im blog. Diesen Vortrag über Open-source economics kann ich auch sehr empfehlen. Er ist zwar nicht so perfekt vorgetragen, aber die Botschaft ist cool. Ich hatte das mit dieser Klarheit, wie es Yochai Benkler ausdrückt nie betrachtet.

Television in Hong Kong

During the weekend I watched a bit TV. In my place we mostly have English channels: SkyNews (GB), Fox (USA), National Geographics, an international Korean channel, and a few more. We also have the full set of CCTV, the official Chinese broadcasting system.
My impression is that most of the emitted program is hectic, you can often notice a change of topic each 5-10 minutes. There are rarely films, etc., and a lot of ads. But even in the ads you can find something interesting: They advertise a lot for the local elections, and this they do in two ways:

Active voting: People shall participate activly, and go to the elections
Anti corruption: they ad pretty much against corruption, and that you will end in jail for a long time, if you take part in corruption

We should have that, too.
The most interesting show I've seen was on the Korean channel. One hour of Korean pro-e-gaming scene, very interesting. And finally the truth turned out and is no longer neglectible: Starcraft is currently the best game on the market.

Warum ist eigentlich die Sicherheit an den meisten Universitätsrechenzentren so schlecht? Hier in Hong Kong ist es besonders schlimm, aber auch Dresden bietet da keine Ausnahme.
Klar - eine einfache Antwort kann ich mir auch selbst geben: Kostet Geld, sachen ordentlich zu verwalten und ordentliches Personal einzusetzen. Aber es sollten doch wenigstens die Mittel zur Verfügung stehen, auf Hinweise entsprechend zu reagieren, wie z.B. "Auf den Computern A,B und C sollte der und der Bugfix eingsepielt werden". Argh.

Summary: 1st week of lectures are over

Today I had my last class of my first week, thus I am going to tell you my first impressions.
First of all: most of my professors speak a good, understandable English. The atmosphere in the lecture theaters is comperable to the atmosphere I know from Dresden. Students even fell asleep during the first lecture! As far as I can tell the level is not as high as I know it from TU-Dresden; the only class promissing to be a bit work is "Wireless communications" so far. But interesting are the other classes, too.
I am quite happy that the impression about Chinese students that I've got form my very good Chinese friend Lai turned out to be completly wrong... puh

Touch rugby

Today I went to a rugby class. After some warmup, we played some touch rugby. Touch rugby is not as hard as real rugby, but a nice game anyhow. We are starting to play real rugby by the end of october. Hopefully it gets a bit more agressive.

First day, first lectures

Ok, today university began for sure. The enrollment / registration process is completed, and I already attendet the first classes.
My very first was a tutorial, and I was the only person there - no tutorial for this course in the first week.
The second and third course were "software testing and maintainance". The professor made a good impression, it was funny and the feeling within the classrooms are about the same as I am used to. Although there are many hot chinese girls, the nerdy ones are often the ugly ones, too - right as in Germany. ;)
Tomorrow is my day off (next to the weekend). This is quite usual here and most of the students have even more spare time. This has two reasons: most of them have to work full time next to their studies (this is also the reason, why most of my courses are late (nerd compatible), which means they are until 21:30). Second it is because they can not afford so many courses per semester. You pay for each credit that you earn at university, though the more you study, the more expansive it gets...

In China you will always find a lot of people. Maybe in Hong Kong there are less, but still more than an average European is used to. An example is that you have a one hour queue at the bank, until you get served. The demand is higher than the offer.
So if there are many people and only very few flats, they get expansive those flats. Just to give you an imagination: for an a bedroom seperated from the other bedroomm by a paper wall (because normally it was just a studio meant for one) you pay about 450,- € aircondition (AC) inclusive. The rent for a flat suitable for one to two people you pay about 1.300,- €.
Most of the buildings here are quite rotten. They were built in the 70ies, and never renovated. Tonight I will post some pictures, finally.
Ohhhhh - I wish I were in the students residence hall... There you pay for a semester, what other people are paying at least a month... And you get involved into all those neat activities that take place here, and where I can not take part of, because I search a flat. Damn it.

I know that M$ is quite deep in every market, and in my home universtity they could probably not live without it, neither. But what I see here is disgusting. Professors hand out their scripts in ppt, all configuration instructions are in windows, sometimes you do have to use Windows-only software, too. They do not even mention other operating systems. I guess that is because of all those business guys here...
The other strange thing is how everybody relies on proprietary services - why using jabber, we can use facebook-chat, though... DOH!

DVD-Import bei iMovie

Obwohl man in diversen Quellen immer wieder liest, dass man DVDs nicht in iMovie importieren kann, ist das falsch. Dort wird immer zu einem Rip in MPEG-4 oder DV geraten (rechenzeit- oder plattenplatztechnisch der reinste Wahnsinn). Dabei geht es völlig offiziell mit iMovie: How to import a DVD into iMovie '08.
Funktioniert natürlich über diesen Weg nur mit un-„geschützen“ DVDs.

Hong Kong , the two sided city

Ok, the longer I stay here, the more impressions I get - normal.
First I'd like to tell that money plays a big role here. I knew it before, as Hong Kong is the richest city after Tokyo in Asia, and also the most expansive one. But Here are things, that I have never seen before: For example there is a three class queueing system at the bank counters! Here are so many people that want to show how rich they are. Symbols count so much over here, I've never seen that before. Second: accomodation. This is a really hard point, I did not think it would get that hard. You pay at least 400 € for a really crappy room, moreover 500-600€ damn. You need to go into a flatshare, as you can only do rental contracts if you stay one to two year (less than two years, you will pay with a fine). And the local flatshare offers are made by rippers.
But third: today I had a really nice evening. With one of an Indian exchange Student we went to an Indian area, and he ordered good food (I never tasted before) for really cheap. We then went on to Mong Kok where you can find a big big flee marked ("good quality", "cheap, cheap" ;) ). We finally ended in a local Ka La O K (karaoke) and I sang a song. This way we got in touch with some locals (those who could speak English).

First day meeting the others

Today was the first day, when I met all the other international students - quite a lot Germans are among us and luckyly I am not the only visiting student.
Being a visiting student at CityU means you are treated quite shitty. The difference between visiting student and exchange student is: Visiting Students have to pay for courses, the do not get on campus accomodation, they get no real introduction, no student reduction card, and so on, and so on. And this although we pay. Accomodation is the biggest problem here. One can expect Paris prices, which means easily 400 € a month and up. We try to rent a flat , so it might become cheaper.
Tonight we were going out for the first time. 180 HK$ flatrate - you can drink a lot of cola for that. Orange juice was not available.
Bitchy girls were available. On the one hand the girls in the pub, on the other hand real prostitutes that are in the area around mtr station ~~"Admirality"~~ "Wan Chai".

First day at City University: The Wlan surprise

I just arrived, and there is chaos. But everybody is willing to help and thus busy. I have a spare moment, opened the laptop and just remarked that that the WPA wlan from Dresden works here with the same configuration (eduroam). This is quite amazing on the one hand, but on the other hand also kind of frightening.
I will write more later on.

Finally, after about 32 hours of travel I arrived. I even identified placed that I still know from last year. My Hostel is nice (Single room, shower, toilet, free wlan, 23 €) but something went wrong with the booking.
The flight was nice, the food was good. They had great entertainment technics aboard: About 100 on demand films in several languages (this way I saw Kung Fu Panda), about 100 Albums with different kind of music, live TV and radio. You could also write sms, email or play games. The controller was quite cool, gamepad on the one side, phone on the other.
On the airport there was free wlan, too, so I could read mail. The best mail was that today my visa is ready, so one problem less.
I never had as few problems, as within this voyage. No fingerprints taken, no computer forensics, no stupid questions, no personal search.
Note to myself: bring toilet paper where ever you go in china

Transferstop in Doha / Qatar

I am currently in Doha. I have to wait about 6 hours for my flight to Hong Kong. I am very satisfied - I had enough leg space in the plane, the food was very good (lamb) and now I have free Internet at the airport. That is how it should be. (Although the internet is quite unstable and the delay is higt)
Another thing to mention is that one of the biggest accidents that could have happend, happend. I accidently broke my headphone plug, when it was still sticking in the device, and this although I have only heard one of about thwenty podcasts and about another ten hours of travel... Let's see how much the headphones are here at the airport

Ok, guys. Sunday I'm leaving for a six months trip to Hong Kong. After my first professional impressions of China and chinese Culture, and a trip for one month last year, I decided, that I need more time to get a far east culture more to know.
The plan is to study and to do an internship afterwards. Let's see what will happen, because I have no visa yet. And as already many things went wrong, I wouldn't be too surprised if things go worse.

Seit gestern ist er draußen. Nachdem Batman begins schon echt super war, hatte ich natürlich hohe Erwartungen - und sie wurden voll erfüllt. Der Stoff hätte sogar für zwei Teile gereicht.
Der Joker wurde auch extrem cool gespielt. Und auch schon wieder richtig gruselig. Auf jeden Fall gucken!!!

Dresden kulinarisch: Kebab in Istanbul / Schmausen im nahen Osten

Als zweiten Teil in der kulinarischen Reihe möchte ich über eins meiner Lieblingsgerichte sprechen: Döner Kebab.
Der wohl bekannteste Döner-Laden in Dresden ist mit seinen 3 Filialen Babos. Die Auswahl ist groß, der Geschmack ok - auf der Alaunstr. ist der Service auch super, was man von den anderen Läden nicht unbedingt sagen kann.
Lägere Zeit war mein Lieblingsdöner-Mann in der Louisenstr. angesiedelt. Ein kleiner Laden, mit leckerem Döner. Das Personal scheint allerdings aus dem indischen Raum zu kommen. Die haben mir sogar mal nen Döner geschenkt, als ich kein Geld dabei hatte
Neuerdings ist mein Lieblings-Döner allerdings gegenüber der Schauburg. Ich glaube er heißt "Yufka Döner". Erst mal ist er günstiger, als die ganzen anderen Läden in der inneren Neustadt. Dann macht er aber auch immer noch leckere Aubergine in die vegetraischen Teigtaschen, die ich in letzter Zeit öfter esse, als die mit Fleisch.

Die meisten Döner bieten auch Falafel an - meines Erachtens sind die aber ungenießbar. Wenn man in Dresden echte, frische Falafel essen möchte, muss man zum "seidenen Tor" am Ende der Louisenstr.(Ungefähr da). Dort gibt es auch andere syrische Spezialitäten. Vor allem kann ich das Scharwarma empfehlen. Die Köche haben ihr Handwerk drauf!
Im Kuskus-Haus, das ungefähr an der Louisenstr. 30 liegt gibt es algerische Spezialitäten. Der Service ist super freundlich. Leider ist der Koch kein solcher ausgebildeter, und so kommt es das die Qualität nicht immer 100% ist. Wer alldigngs gerne mal Merguez ißt, findet sie in Dresden hier. (Leider nicht zu vergleichen mit denen in Paris)

Dresden kulinarisch: Koreanisches Restaurant Maru

In Dresden kann man einige Feinschmäcker-Schatzinseln finden. Eine ist das koreanische Restaurant Maru, dass seit ca. einem Monat in der Neustadt aufgemacht hat.
Meine liebste Koreanische Speise ist Bulgogi: Mariniertes Rindfleisch, live am Tisch gebraten. Es ist üblich, dass es das Gericht erst ab zwei Mitessern serviert wird, also nicht wundern. (Preis für 2 Personen momentan 26,- €) Es werden immer mehrere Salate und Reis dazu gereicht, einer der Salate ist Kimchi, ein feurig scharfer Kohl.
Auch viele andere Gerichte sind empfehlenswert. Mein bester Freund liebt zum Beispiel Gimbab
Im Restaurant Maru ist der Service sehr freundlich (eine Familie: Vater und Tochter bedienen, Muttern in der Küche). Das Restaurant ist cool eingerichtet. Unten gibt es einen kleinen Laden mit Koreanischen Spezialitäten.
Dieses Lokal bekommt auf jeden Fall wieder von mir Besuch.

iTunes-Mankos aus der Sicht eines Applefanboy

iTunes wird ja bei jedem Mac OS X mit installiert - ob man will, oder nicht. Man mag über die Bedienung und die Programmierung dieses Programmes streiten können - (ich hätte auch nichts gegen etwas Besseres) aber es gibt auch Punkte die sind objektiv einfach scheiße!
Mitgeliefert wird eine Jukeboxfunktion, die nach bestimmten Schemata musik zusammenstellt - alles recht automatisiert. Nett für parties. Für das iPhone gibt es auch AppleRemote, ein Programm das iTunes über Wlan fernsteuern kann. Beides soweit ganz nett. Was jetzt jedoch fehlt ist, dass meine komplette Bibliothek in die Programme einbezogen wird. Was diese Programme nämlich machen, ist nur die lokalen Datein abzuspielen. Dateien, die ich übers Netz einbinde, oder die vom Mp3-Stick kommen werden nicht mit einbezogen - was soll der scheiß? Wozu hab ich denn nen 80 GB Mp3-Player? Damit ich nicht mehr alles lokal haben muss!
Ja ja. ... Wäre ich doch nicht so ein Applefanboy - ich würd den Scheiß an die Wand werfen!

Wer Diashows mit französischer Musik unterlegen muss/möchte, sollte sich folgende CC-lizensierte Alben auf Jamendo anhören:

Ohnehin ist Jamendo ein unendlicher Quell guter freier Musik, wie ich jetzt (viel zu spät) festgestellt habe. Interessanterweise gelingt das Herunterladen von Stücken aber unter OS X nur mit Firefox, beim Safari öffnet sich nur das QuickTime-Plugin mit einem Fragezeichen (das kann man zwar mit dauerhaftem Druck auf die Escape-Taste unterbinden, aber das nervt zu sehr). Dafür funktioniert unter Firefox das Vorhören bei mir nicht, trotz aktiviertem JS wird nichts wiedergegeben. Schöne neue Welt.

Wir alle kommen als Nichtswisser und asoziale Egoisten auf die Welt. Von diesem Start zum Endziel, dem zivilisatorisch-schöpferischen, sozialen Individuum, ist es ein weiter Weg. Die wichtigsten sozialen Impulse erhalten wir während der ersten vier Lebensjahre. Alles weitere ist Lernen, in den verschiedenen Schulen, welche die Gesellschaft dafür errichtet, im Selbststudium, und letztlich in der Schule des Lebens (Erfahrung ist bekanntlich die beste - und die teuerste - Schule). Jungen Menschen fällt der Übergang vom Lernen in der Schulklasse zum Lernen im Hörsaal erfahrungsgemäß nicht leicht, deshalb sind vielleicht einige Worte dazu angebracht.

Der Schulklassenbetrieb war noch sehr stark darauf aufgebaut, daß der junge, im Elternhaus existentiell geborgene Mensch ein impulsives und emotionales Wesen ist und am besten in geführten Gruppen unter milden Wettbewerbsbedingungen lernt, wo das Wissen "vorverdaut", in kleinen Happen und in spielerisch schmackhaft gemachter Form dargeboten wird, wo es für Leistungen Belohnungen und für Versager Strafen gibt, und wo häufige Wiederholungen stattfinden. An der Hochschule ist es anders. Hochschulreife bedeutet, daß der junge Mensch erkannt hat, daß er, wie jeder andere, "in die Welt geworfen" ist, seines eigenen Glückes oder Unglückes Schmied ist, aus dem angebotenen Wissen aus eigener Motivierung etwas behält oder auch nicht. "You are on your own." Dies erfordert, um den Anstrengungen des Studiums standzuhalten und die zum selbstmotivierten Lernen erforderliche Selbstzucht aufbringen zu können, Begeisterung für das gewählte Fach. Man muß sich für sein Fach begeistern, dann fliegt einem alles zu, auch wenn man keinen IQ von 180 hat. Sonst ist es Quälerei.

Der Ingenieursberuf ist der edelste Beruf, den es gibt. Der Ingenieur (von Ingenium = schöpferischer Geist), als Inbegriff des homo faber, baut die Zivilisation auf diesem Planeten und verbessert die Lebensbedingungen des Menschen. Die Naturwissenschaften sind, anders als z. B. die Jurisprudenz oder die Theologie, "akkumulativ", d. h. jeder Fortschritt, den Sie erarbeiten, geht in das kollektive Menschheitswissen unverlierbar ein und befruchtet weiteren Fortschritt. Der tätige Ingenieur braucht also nie über den Sinn seines Lebens nachzugrübeln, er ist das nützlichste Glied der Gesellschaft, auch wenn die Gesellschaft dies oft nicht zugibt. Nur in diesem Bewußtsein kann man die Härte unseres Berufs durchstehen. Denn der Ingenieur muß ja das gesamte, von seinen Vorgängern erarbeitete Wissen seines Faches, als sein Rüstzeug, kennen, muß 20 Jahre seines Lebens in seine Berufsvorbereitung investieren. Während dieser Zeit amüsieren sich die anderen. Außerdem muß der Ingenieur eine breite Übersicht über alle menschlichen Wissensgebiete (einschließlich Psychologie, Soziologie, Management, Volkswirtschaft etc) besitzen, sonst geht er im Wettbewerb unter. Das erfordert lebenslanges Lernen, insbesondere auch deshalb, weil sich heute das wissenschaftlich-technische Wissen der Menschheit alle 10 Jahre verdoppelt, d. h. wenn Sie 10 Jahre nach Beendigung Ihres Studiums kein Buch mehr anrühren, sind Sie hoffnungslos veraltet. Sie müssen also das Lernen zur Lebensgewohnheit machen!

Alles, das Sie monatlich mindestens 10 mal tun, wird zur Gewohnheit, geht also ohne Willensanstrengung vor sich, sagen die Psychologen. Bauen Sie also ein System von gesunden, positiven Gewohnheiten auf! Kein erfolgreicher Ingenieur sitzt täglich stundenlang vor dem Fernseher, spielt Skat, trinkt, hat Frauen, das ist in dem Beruf nicht drin. Unser Beruf erfordert also ein gewisses Maß an Askese. Der Ingenieur weiß, daß er seinen Lebensbeitrag innerhalb von etwa 30 Berufsjahren leisten will, daß jede ungenutzte Stunde verloren ist, und daß er zur Erreichung seines Lebensziels ein wohlgeplantes, effizientes Leben, in allen seinen Aspekten, führen muß. Wem das zu hart ist, der möge sich rechtzeitig anders orientieren.

Nachdem Sie also die wichtigste Entscheidung Ihres Lebens, die Berufswahl, getroffen haben, denken Sie daran, daß die zweitwichtigste Entscheidung in Ihrem Leben die Gattenwahl ist. Während die meisten Frauen im Leben des Mannes die Nr. 1 sein wollen, geht beim richtigen Ingenieur die Arbeit vor allem anderen. Die ideale Ingenieursfrau versteht das, ist treusorgend und anspruchslos und gibt ihrem hart-arbeitenden Mann seelischen Beistand. Schon mancher begabte Ingenieur ist von seiner selbstsüchtigen Frau ruiniert worden. Treffen Sie daher Ihre Entscheidung erst nach Prüfung auch dieser Aspekte. Als Belohnung winkt dem Tüchtigen die unbeschreibliche Freude, die man empfindet, wenn man eine schwere Arbeit wohlgetan hat, wenn man etwas Bleibendes geschaffen hat, der Entwicklung vorangeholfen hat.

In diesem Sinne bitte ich, die Vorlesung "Werkstoffe der Elektrotechnik" zu verstehen. Wir sind keine Penne. Der Lehrstoff ist interessant. Arbeiten Sie aktiv, aus eigenem Antrieb mit, wir helfen Ihnen!

Ach ja. Als Hobby-Administrator seiner Freundin hat man ja ab und an die Aufgabe ihr unter Windows XP irgendetwas einzurichten. Die aufgabe Heute: Es wird ein Bluetoothdongle installiert, um Verbindung zu einer A2DP Senke auf zu nehmen.
Dongle wird reingesteckt. Dann muss man eine spezielle Treiber-CD einlegen. Bluetooth is ja auch so unüblich. Und dann muss man sich für jedes vom Dongle unterstützte Protokoll einen extra Treiber installieren!
Der Installationsassistenti richtet dann allerhand Dinge ein, und Fragt komische Fragen. Ich hab keine Ahnung, was man antworten soll.
Als dann die Orgie fertig war, galt es noch die Senke zu aktivieren. Das Peering war schnell erledigt, aber die Verbindung sehr instabil. Und: der Ton kam trotzdem aus dem Laptop. In der (furchtbar lahmen) Systemsteuerung habe ich auch nicht gefunden, wo der Fehler war. Bei Audio stand jedenfalls als Ausgabe: Bluetooth-Audio.
Ich bin wohl zu sehr Mac & Linux verwöhnt.
